Choose the Adventure

“If you focus more on the adventure of trying, the outcome doesn’t hold so much power. Growing up my dad would encourage me to fail, to take risks, and try new things. After a perceived failure (because the only real failure is not trying), he would ask me what I got from the experience. I didn’t understand at the time why he was “forcing” me to recap failures. I eventually learned that there were always hidden blessings. Always some beautiful nugget that made my life more interesting and richer. Failure can either traumatize and immobilize us, or it can be seen as brave, daring and full of juicy nuggets that make us far more interesting than sitting on the couch. To think more like the latter takes practice and discipline, but it’s so worth it. Throughout my life, in reflection, I realized if given the choice, I would always choose the adventure over the outcome.” @sarablakely

This week my sister emailed me a link to a Design Sponge article. It was an interview with a fashion designer. The interviewer asked the designer what they would do if they had 3 more hours in each day (27 hours, instead of the usual 24 hours). I thought it was a great question. It stumped me, I immediately asked myself what I would do with 3 additional hours everyday. I was honest, I was completely straight with myself. I said that I would probably blow it off, and lump it in with the rest of my day. The extra time would more than likely go unnoticed. I was surprised by my answer. It made me think that I was taking all of the hours I have each day for granted, spending them indulgently, allowing them to fly by unnoticed.

The question from the article really made me think, and as a result, two more questions came to mind:

1. What if I had 3 more friends?
(What kind of friends would I like them to be? What kind of relationship would I like to have with them? How would I like us to benefit each other?)

2. What if I had 3 more chances?
(What if I had the chance to improve upon something that I’ve neglected, written-off or failed at? In what ways would I reignite it and make it the way I know it has the potential to be?)

I feel like the two questions I came up with helps me to better answer the question from the fashion/design article. The reason I was not eagerly jumping at the chance to appreciate and wisely use the 3 additional hours — and gave my honest, yet unenthusiastic and unempowered answer, was because… I am not truly passionate about what I am currently doing and how I spend each day. If I was, I would grab the 3 extra hours and run with them, savoring and making the most of each minute, wildly & passionately enjoying all 3 hours — clearly seeing them as a gifted opportunity — as I should see all 24 hours of each day, that I am currently blessed with.

What if you had 3 more hours, 3 more friends, and 3 more chances? How would you spend the time? What would you want out of them? In what way would your life change?

On Your Best Day

I’ll be turning 40 in less than 6 weeks. I’m excited to enter a new year (2015!) and a new decade (my 40s!). For some reason, I’m excited to turn 40. Eager to see how my life unfolds from that point forward.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what works for me and what doesn’t, and the gift that growing older gives. As I think about entering a new phase of my life, I know how I want my life to feel. Goals and excessive planning have little interest for me. In my opinion, people set goals for desired feelings in the future, that are completely possible in the present. I don’t believe in setting goals, I believe in setting up an environment to foster feelings.

This month, I decided to get a head start on the new year and create a daily practice that I will work to maintain throughout the year. The purpose of this practice is to create the ideal day, that fosters ideal feelings, that evolves into an amazing year, and adds up to a extraordinary life.

I have a few things on my list that are always keys to feeling my best. I haven’t designed my perfect day yet, so I’ll just share with you a few of the things that I am planning on incorporating into my daily mix & plan.

These are in no special order, I’m listing them randomly.

  • Waking up early, when the morning is silent & fresh.
  • Drinking plenty of water, 1 – 2 liters during the day.
  • Exercising & deep breathing first thing in the morning.
  • Having liquid meals, especially green smoothies & juices.
  • Meditative & reflective moments, time taken for stillness in action.
  • Being creative & self-expressed in all that I do.
  • Eating a nourishing whole-food homemade vegan meal.
  • Taking care of what is most important, living my priorities.
  • Sharing my work and myself with others openly.
  • Maintaining a neat, minimal & organized home environment.
  • Getting fresh air in my lungs & warm sunrays on my face.
  • Being honest with myself & others, living my truth.

When that list is a part of my day, I have a great day! I feel great, I have great energy, and I go to bed reflecting on a day well spent — eager to do it all again the next day.

In the next few days, I am going to design a daily practice, a step-by-step routine, that I will follow for 2015. It doesn’t matter to me that each day goes as written. What does matter to me is that I am living my values and setting standards for myself. I want a great life, and it all starts with a great day — over & over, becoming better & better, getting sweeter with time.
